Disclaimer and Pre-training: an evening in Jerusalem-February 25, 2020

Disclaimer:  This blog is not a balanced picture of the Israeli-Palestinian situation.  I am describing what I saw and heard.  I am not objective. 

Arrived in Tel Aviv around 4 PM. There is 6 hours difference in time between Israel and North Carolina so I had been up around 28 hours. I took the shuttle to Jerusalem Hotel in (wait for it) Jerusalem.

Jerusalem-solar water heaters, although the majority of electricity is natural gas and coal. 



Lovely breakfast included sheep yogurt, dates, grilled peppers, eggplant. Talked to a young Palestinian about the hotel hanging several US Flags along with Israeli flags.

Y esterday, the Palestinians asked the Israeli Jews and the few Palestinian citizens of Israel to join them on a discussion of the elections.  The report out to the entire group later in the evening was uplifting with the Palestinians feeling happy and their need to be heard fulfilled. They will remain at Talitha Kumi because they are not allowed into Jersusalem.  The internationals first visited the Holy Land Trust. Although he hears a great deal of criticism about nonviolent resistance-“selling out to Israelis” “Popular resistance”, he believes that just to argue politics, each side has the truth, but will not meet needs. 10th of March-West Bank rural area

Israel has closed i ts borders to incoming flights because of the Virus. I leave to go home tomorrow, 6 days early. Today my notes will come from my tour guide, who is a Palestinian living in Israel, he has residency, but not citizenship. There were four of us who were touring with Mohammad, who drove and provided us information. Those Palestinians who lived in Israeli territory before 1948 have full citizenship including the right to vote. Those Palestinians who live in East Jerusalem are under civil law so have residency, but not citizenship; they pay taxes but can't vote. Those Palestinians who live in the West Bank or Gaza Strip have no legal rights, limited movement, but pay taxes.  Just as a reminder: The Oslo II Accord, which was never a signed agreement divided the Israeli-occupied West Bank  into three administrative divisions:  Areas A, B and  C . Intensive Interpersonal Training --Nonviolent Communication (NVC) Training

From February 26-March 5,  I participated in training with about 70 other people divided fairly evenly among Israeli Jews, Israeli/West Bank Arabs, and Internationals at  Talitha Kumi, Beit Jala near Bethlehem.  I will just briefly provide a few stories and incidents from an intense 9 days.  There will be a separate post with pictures of the Internationals' trip to Bethlehem when the Israeli citizens voted on Monday.  The Palestinians who couldn't vote were going to have an individual program. During the first day introduction, we found out  that after Trump’s plan- Palestinian Authority and Israeli government shut down all of the conferences, trainings, meetings in Beit Jala.
